John began dancing at the age of 16, finding it a healthy way to celebrate life during challenging times. After finishing college, he began training to teach dance. By this time, he had performed with Buddy Schwimmer’s Northern California dance team and studied with the top competitors in Europe and America. He received his teaching medals and taught his first class in 1982.

John Ross is a legend in the Sonoma County Dance scene. He began teaching at the lodge room of the Santa Rosa Veterans Building. Charles Schulz discovered John, and encouraged him to relocate to his dance room upstairs at Snoopy’s Home Ice. John was there for many years with his ex-wife Emily as they built their dance business. John opened The Ballroom in Rohnert Park in 1998 and operated it until 2019.

He has never stopped dancing and teaching, and absolutely loves what he does.

Excellent classes! I love learning the correct way to do these dances.  Turning technique is so important and makes dance more fun and more safe. Learning dance with John Ross has been a wonderful, enlightening experience. My understanding of ballroom dance technique has dramatically increased and I am enjoying it so much. 100% recommend! He is a wonderful dance instructor! My partner and I both learn very differently and he is patient and understanding and somehow works well with both of us!
